Lessons from a Mockingbird
There’s a mockingbird that celebrates dawn’s breaking each morning outside my window. He is loud and joyful and does fair-to-middlin’ imitations of cardinals, sparrows, and jays. I love it.
He reminds me of the Scripture:
Consider your leaders, who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith. –Hebrews 13:7
He is imitating those around him who are more expert in what they do. The Real McCoys, if you will. He does not imitate perfectly, but he does it with his whole birdy heart!
In our lives, when we imitate those who are more expert than us, we learn and grow and practice. We might not do it well, but we are on a good path.
Of course, the most expert Expert is our Lord Jesus Christ. It is Him that we truly want to imitate. My pastor today quoted Edith Warton:
“There are two ways of spreading light: to be the candle or the mirror that reflects it.”
He pointed out that God is the light, we are the mirror. We are reflecting God’s light when we imitate Him.
How are you imitating Christ? Are you a clean mirror, a fair imitator? Ask God to help you daily become more and more accurate imitator/reflector of Him.
