Fasting and Peanut Butter
Last year my son fasted broccoli for Lent. (You can imagine, it was no big sacrifice for him…)
There are all sorts of fasts. In the past, I have done liquid fasts, coffee fasts (serious indeed), “Daniel fasts” (fruits and veggies), and short total fasts.
So this year, it is delightful to fast with my church. I have been close to a Daniel fast- except that I’m on doctor’s orders to eat beef daily (how many people do you know are under doctor’s to do that?).
Now, don’t you think that peanut butter is a veggie? I mean, really…
So, a couple of days ago, when I felt like God was directing me to fast peanut butter, the fast became serious!
If you know Tillmans, you know peanut butter is the staff of life. It goes on almost everything. So when one gives up peanut butter, one is giving up something very, very important.
An idol, perhaps?
I doubt it is an idol to most folks. But for me?
At the end of the day, I’d rather worship God.
Prayer is reaching out after the unseen; fasting is letting go of all that is seen and temporal. Fasting helps express, deepen, confirm the resolution that we are ready to sacrifice anything, even ourselves to attain what we seek for the kingdom of God.
